The other day, one of the glorious SMFA Ninjas typed the words:

I have so many new lessons and approaches on my plate since meeting you. I’m amped to see my time be spent on greater results and eventually less push. I’d actually like less push sooner than later.

Ah… gotta tell ya, there’s ALWAYS gonna be push.

It’s just different push… not less.

Here’s why I know.

I work with folks who trek it all the way up to Emmy Awards, short-listing for Oscar nominations, and coveted three-picture deals from major studios, and every person at every tier has this in common:

The push.

The hustle. The pursuit. The game. The work.

The work takes different shapes at different tiers, but never is a creative *not* doing the work.

At first, it’s, “Please, anyone, SEE me,” and then it’s, “Please, the right people, see me the right way,” and then it’s, “Please, everyone, see me just enough that I don’t leave your mind but not so much that I’m overexposed or lose all of my privacy,” and there are many shades of push in between.

You’re managing a team, you’re maintaining a staff, your work now sustains the paychecks of others. Right now you may say, “Phew! Can’t wait! Give me those champagne problems, y’all!”

Cool.

But if you — for some reason — are only hustling your booty off right now because you think it leads to a future version of yourself who needn’t hustle at all, I’m afraid you’ve got a misunderstanding of what this pursuit is all about.

“The pursuit…” — it never ends; it just changes.

What a wonderful realization to help you ENJOY whatever version of the push you’re living today, huh?

You’re building muscles you’ll use at every tier!

How’s your relationship with “the push” today? I’d love to hear what allows you to embrace it all.

Yes! And if you’re a forceful self-pusher like me, then ENJOYING the push can also relax you into the perfect amount of pushing! “Joy is the essence of success”. Thank you Bonnie and fellow Ninjas!

Ahhh! Thank you for this, Bonnie! I really need to work out my relationship with the push/pursuit. I get so tired (& bummed out) always feeing like I’m striving. Striving is exhausting! But my strive usually means that where I am now is not enough. Poopy, right? So if I can reconfigure my strive into the pure joy of today’s pursuit (& recognize that there’s a daily push no matter the stage of career), perhaps I won’t feel so disheartened. Thank you!

Constance — Yes! The joy of the pursuit is so much more delicious than the exhaustion of the STRIVE. I love this reframing and I hope you’ll let me know how it’s going for you!

Sarah — That’s fantastic that your pushing (when you enjoy it) relaxes you into joy. How lovely!

    Thank you, glorious ladies!
