Feedback on 12 Books to Read This Year

So, as you might have expected, this week’s Your Turn is filled with “yes, and…” for last week’s list of 12 Books to Read This Year. Let’s fire up our library cards!

I’m reading a book you’d like. Mindset by Carol Dweck. Her premise is that there are two kinds of people: fixed mindset vs. growth mindset. Fixed people never change, can’t change, don’t value it — but then bitch and moan when things never improve. Growth people are about lifelong learning, change, breaking the mold, etc. The company I work at weeds out people who are fixed. It’s quite refreshing.

Ooh, love that! I’m definitely checking this one out!

Happy New Year, Bon!

Thanks for the great book list. Just wanted to add two that have meant so much to me (both for my acting career and personally):

  1. The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle: Mega interesting read on how “Greatness isn’t born; it’s grown.” He goes through the process. So cool!
  2. Turning Pro: It’s Steven Pressfield, so you probably already know it. Made a huge impact on me!!!

Also, love that you brought up self-taping at the start of the year cuz last week I had my annual planning meeting with my agent and he has formed relationships with a set of CDs that will take self tapes from his clients. Great news for me because when I moved to LA (last year) I started a professional self-taping service called “Lights. Camera. Audition!”

Being from Atlanta, I’ve been self-taping for years and I’m very particular about using pro sound, lights, and video equipment. I had CDs in the southeast show me on their own screens what a big difference it makes.

All the best!
Ravi

Outstanding, Ravi! Thank you for this. I really could’ve put all of Pressfield’s books on the list, as I’m a Do the Work junkie. Such good stuff in Turning Pro and The Authentic Swing too. Congrats on making the big move and on the smart business venture! Oh, and I’ll definitely check out the Coyle book. Thank you!

Nice list, did not know some titles. Thanks. Are you a Canfield fan? You must know The Success Principles. That one’s a doozie.

xoxo
Bobby Reed

Ooh, I don’t know this one, Bobby. Thank you! I’ve heard Canfield’s name out there and I’ll be sure to check this one out as well.

Hooray! Happy reading, everyone!
