Delegating vs. Outsourcing (Don’t Be a Slactor)

BonBlast title: Finding On-Brand Material for Auditions, Reel Footage, Showcases

Yeah, Mei — that’s actually the problem. Because they do “get to know what you want to submit to,” it is perilously close to stuff that’s 100% illegal in the State of California (paying for rep). If they were JUST a VA service submitting on everything? That’d be less troubling, as the law is concerned.

Of course, it would also be less effective… a bit like hiring someone to throw spaghetti at the walls.

It’s so important not to outsource things that build relationships ****in a relationship business.****

Just remember that the key here is to outsource AFTER you’ve done it enough for yourself to know exactly how to run your actor business and where you could use more efficiency/support/outside views. What tends to happen with stuff like this is that actors (slactors) outsource way before they should and they end up missing key steps to building the foundation for a thriving, healthy, massively successful career… and when you SKIP the steps, you always end up having to go back and fill in those gaps where you paid someone else to do the work for you. Always.

Delegating vs. outsourcing, is what we’re talking about here. Delegating means you know what you’re doing and are now ready for someone else to run that part of your business. Outsourcing means you don’t want to get to know how to do something because you feel it’s not that important. If it’s not that important, consider not doing it (and not paying someone else to do it). If it IS important, do it your damn self ’til you are able to explain *exactly* what you need when you’re hiring someone else to do it while you work on more important elements of building your empire.

is there someone I can hire that finds scenes specifically for my targeted type to use in casting director workshops or agency workshops where they have you bring your own sides? Is this a service anyone provides

Definitely do the work. You’ve got that point. Clearly. Please don’t pay anyone to do it for you IF what you’re paying for includes that it’s an original scene that will only be for you. It isn’t, 99% of the time. Services exist wherein they say they’re creating content for your brand and it’s unique to you and they’re counting on you not watching a bajilliondy actors using scenes in workshops, in showcases, in demo reel footage. Y’know who sees all that? Me. I see it. And they’ll tweak a word or two, but it’s “original” from a file with your type listed as the actors who’ll buy it again and again. *rolls eyes*

I think getting suggestions in ACTING CLASS is the best way to do this if you don’t want to become a script junkie. But you should become a script junkie. It’s in your best interest. It gives you an edge. It keeps you from being a slactor. It means you’ll know not only what material sings to you creatively but also who write perfectly for you — and that folds into your targeting work. It’s ALL up-side.

Far more beneficial to write up a list of things that attract you to the material you already love (but feel you’re too attached to) and share that list with a group of people, asking them to “yes, and…” what you’ve listed with their suggestions, about which you’ll be more dispassionate. Your fluency for material will improve vastly and this is SO good for you in so many ways. Doing things like the Ninja Self-Tape Challenge further help with this. And of course we have days in https://bonniegillespie.com/get-in-gear-for-the-next-tier the 100-day challenge where we dig in on this from a writing perspective as well as a brand perspective.

listen to shows you like and transcribe the scene. I’ve also seen this done in workshops where people bring in scenes that are not easily accessible on ShowFax or DailyScript, and they’ve received good data/feedback from their performances. Like Bonnie says, this is part of your work, finding the shows that fit your bullseye, and learning the vibe of your favorite script-writers, getting their words in your mouth and body.

There are plenty of things you can outsource in a creative career… but not all of them SHOULD YOU outsource.
