Advice for Actors Outside of Los Angeles

Hello Bonnie –

An actor friend of mine recently referred me to one of your old posts from 2007 about headshots. I’ve read some of your articles before but my friend told me that you are originally from Atlanta, which I didn’t know!

I lived in LA for seven years pursuing acting and have recently relocated to Atlanta. I was going to look through all your archived posts to see if you’ve previously written anything for actors living in Atlanta but once I realized how many articles I would be sifting through I thought it may be easier to email you.

Are there any such posts in your Showfax column specifically pertaining to actors living in ATL? Or do you have any thoughts or advice to give? Thanks for your time and for your insight. Merry Christmas!

Sincerely,
April Spry

Hello April and thanks for writing! I hope Atlanta is already treating you very well. Bummer you and I weren’t able to connect when I was *in* Atlanta in September. I was there to teach a few days of classes with Atlanta Workshop Players and I did a wonderful free seminar for the clients of Houghton Talent Agency (my first agency, back in my acting days in the ATL).

I actually met with a coaching client here in LA earlier this year who was making the big move to Atlanta and we strategized the relationships she most needed to invest in, first, while getting very specific on the research she could do before the move. Definitely, in such a busy minor market, there’s a lot to do!

The good news is, EVERYTHING I have ever written about identifying your bullseye, researching your target buyers, and connecting with them authentically translates into *any* market, so you could pick the topic of your choice, read up on it, and, sure, make some adjustments for your exact situation, then take off!

That said, I think a great idea to supplement the reading you’re already doing would be to join us at the Self-Management for Actors Facebook group, and just ASK your fellow Atlanta ninjas to recommend some columns, based on what has been most helpful for them, in their creative journey. Bonus: You’ll build a relationship with some of the badasses in your market, and perhaps meet up for accountability (even just virtually).

Hope to see you online, and when I’m back in Atlanta of course! 🙂
