So.

Something really cool happened a couple of weeks ago.

Well, it started a couple of months ago, but I figured I was being Punk’d, after my tragic experience attempting to join the CSA in 2005.

But 2005 was a long time ago, and I’ve done a lot of casting since then. Still, I do nowhere near the amount of casting that my colleagues who call themselves casting directors do, because that’s just not my main jam. It’s a part of it. Like 30% of it. Maybe.

There was this very bizarre statement in the letter inviting me to join the Academy. It talked about my “significant contributions to the craft and profession of casting” as a factor. Again, the girl who got picked last in kickball was sure this was a joke.

For a month, the only person who knew I’d been invited was Ninja Jen, who would dutifully check on the “to do” list item once a week. “Have you completed your Academy paperwork?” “No.” “Okay. Next on the list…” and on we’d go.

Finally, I grew a pair. I showed Keith the letter. I updated my casting resumé (for the first time in four years; doctor, heal thyself on the keeping the tools updated thing). I sent in the paperwork. I promised that I wouldn’t beat myself up if it turned out this was like being “pre-approved” for a car loan, but then they run your credit.

No.

Lady Emmy

It was real. It was really, really real. It is really, really real.

And now, I’m one step closer to that pinch-myself moment that will come when actors hold up something gold and shiny and say my name during their acceptance speeches. One step closer because now, every time someone says, “I’d like to thank the Academy” while holding up an Emmy, they’re thanking me.

The badassiest part of this? Most of my qualifying credits — outside of my “body of work” that involves all the writing (allllllllll the writing) — are for projects shot under the SAG New Media Agreement… that then went to TV.

Son of a bitch, it’s a great time to be in this industry. So much is changing. And in beautiful ways.

Now, I’m already behind on my screeners for this year’s voting season. My inbox is flooded with invitations to exclusive Q&As with showrunners and casts of nominated shows. I am about to be inspired — in person — at a totally new tier.

And y’all, I’m taking you with me, because “one of us” just crashed the gate. Come with! I’m leaving no ninja behind.
