Hi Bonnie!
First of all, I love your articles — and most especially the latest one on the attractive factor.
That’s always something I skim over because I am not “traditionally” or “classically” beautiful. I’m a quirky plus-sized girl but at the same time, I’ve landed roles for the “beautiful plus-sized girl” (and I’ve also landed roles for the “rough and tumble young mom” too), etc.
So, I’m always on the fence when I see a role that says “attractive” or “gorgeous” — and I’m otherwise perfect for it — to ask my agent or manager to submit me. Because, I don’t want them to laugh at me (behind my back or via my email): “Ha! Brooke, you’re the quirky plus-sized girl,” or: “Attractive doesn’t equal plus-sized.” But, already it sounds like a lot of that is in my head.
So, that being said, I know I’m not going to submit for or ask to be submitted for the “vixen sex kitten” roles but, now, I AM thinking to start thinking afresh and anew about the “attractive woman” roles.
And, I once heard an acting teacher say the exact same thing — and you’re right — it IS just OOZING charisma that they want.
I found your article really helpful!
Thank you!
Brooke
Brooke, I love this email. As a fellow plus-sized gal, I can assure you that much of this *is* in your mind, because, as a casting director, I can *also* assure you that, UNLESS we use words like “skinny,” “slim,” or “rail-thin,” we are open to your submission.
Attractiveness absolutely has everything to do with that confidence (not cockiness), that self-awareness, that charisma that I talked about last week. I’m so glad you’re open to fully embracing your attractiveness and going after roles that previously might have scared you off.
I think we sometimes put ourselves into categories based on how we THINK others may be labeling us, rather than exploring what is true about who we are.
Here’s to more steps in the right direction, as we all embrace our (very castable) charisma!
