Guilty by Association?

Do the actions of one half of a partnership (relationship, collaboration, whatever) automatically impact the perception of the other half?

As hard as I try to believe that we are seen as individuals, I’m finding that there are people who will condemn me for the choices of another with whom I am closely associated.

So, do I expect more from those who choose to perceive us jointly or do I remove the source of the negative associations? Words of wisdom, anyone?

Unfortunately, “Guilty by Association” seems to be true. I worked for a company that had a rather dubious reputation for not paying their bills (and in Hollywood, that gets out FAST). Even after I left the job, I found it difficult to shake the stigma, even though I wasn’t even a member of the accounting department, nor had any say-so regarding bill payments.

If it’s through anything written or online – in which the judging party doesn’t have the luxury of knowing YOU first – the Guilt by Association thing could end up hurting you.
